Bhai Dooj- A Celebration of Brother-Sister Love

Bhai Dooj is one of the traditional festivals of India and it is celebrated on the last day of the five-day-long Diwali festival. This is the second day of the bright fortnight in the Hindu lunar month of Kartik.

Bhai Dooj is a celebration of the special bond between brothers and sisters. After Raksha Bandhan, it’s the most famous festival dedicated to siblings. In Indian traditions, much emphasis is given on familial ties and interpersonal relationships. Among them, the unique and profound relationship between brothers and sisters is especially revered and Bhai Dooj celebrates this sacred relationship between the siblings. Like other festivals of the country, Bhai Dooj also follows certain age- old rituals and traditions which have been handed down through the generations before.

Bhai Dooj celebrations are almost similar and closely related to that of the festival of Rakshabandhan. On the day of the festival, sisters wake up early and decorate the special pooja thali which is used for the tikka ceremony. During the ceremony, the sisters pray for the long life and prosperity of their brothers and also put a tilak on their foreheads. The tilak or tikka is generally red in color and it is meant to ensure the well-being and prosperity of their brothers. Another important feature of the festival is the Bhaubeej gift for brother which the sisters present to their brothers. And like in Rakshabandhan, brothers and sisters everywhere reach out to one another to celebrate the occasion together and even when they stay far they make sure their siblings enjoy the festivities and send Bhai Dooj gifts online.
